Freeman Named Senior Product Manager - CT3 Texture Analyzer
Middleboro, MA – Brookfield Engineering Laboratories is pleased to announce the promotion of Chris Freeman to the position of Senior Product Manager - CT3 Texture Analyzers. The CT3 is a general purpose instrument used in compression and tension testing of solid and soft-solid substances. It is ideal for a wide variety of applications including: foods, dairy and bakery products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and many more.
Chris already provides CT3 sales and support coverage to customers throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia. He will continue to orchestrate the Brookfield dealer network in these countries.
The CT3 Texture Analyzer has experienced rapid growth in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and industrial markets. This growth is attributable to Chris’ initiative, creating new test fixtures for these specific industries. He has developed a kit for testing tablets, capsules, lipsticks, lotions, and many other items typically manufactured by these industries.
The CT3 simulates test conditions that mimic how the customers use products. Texture testing with the CT3 saves manufacturers money by automating pass/fail test methods as compared with more expensive human sensory test panels.

Powder Flow Behavior Analysis Has Never Been Easier!
The Brookfield Powder Flow Tester provides rapid capability to evaluate flow behavior. R&D formulators, QA/QC technicians, and process design engineers alike will benefit from PFT data output which includes Flow Function and Bulk Density analysis, as well as calculations for Arching Dimension, Rathole Diameter, and Hopper Half Angle. Powder characterization is accomplished using predefined tests that execute automatically in a matter of minutes. Results can be used to minimize or eliminate the downtime and expense that occurs when hoppers fail to discharge properly.
Powder Flow Pro Software controls operation of the PFT and provides detailed data in both tabular and graphical format. For example: Rathole Diameter is plotted vs. powder fill level in the bin; Hopper Half Angle required to achieve mass flow behavior for the powder is plotted vs. hopper outlet dimension. Comparison of flow behavior for different powder samples is easily accomplished by overlaying Flow Functions for each on the same graph which plots powder strength vs. consolidation stress (fill level of powder in the bin).
In response to increasing customer demand, Brookfield has established Powder Testing Labs in five cities around the world: Boston Massachusetts USA, Harlow Essex England, Lorch Germany, Guangzhou China, and Mumbai India. Customer samples are tested within five business days for Flow Function, Wall Friction and Bulk Density as a function of consolidation stresses. This test data can be used to improve the manufacturing process by characterizing powders with flow aids, and it can also serve as a reference for future powder formulations.
For additional information about the PFT, Powder Flow Pro and Brookfield’s Powder Test Labs, visit www.brookfieldengineering.com/products/pft/powder-flow-tester.asp or call 800.628.8139 (USA and Canada) or 508.946.6200.

Secure Testing with Brookfield CT3 Texture Analyzer
Middleboro, MA - Guaranteeing food supply safety has many aspects and more twists and turns than we might anticipate. Recent out breaks of food-borne illnesses from a variety of causes attests to this fact. Identifying the sources often involves tracking the product from its origin to the consumer. This process is complicated because many products are commodities that are often blended together along the way.
One area that isn't often mentioned in media news stories is the data from food product testing. The integrity of test data on food products is also subject to issues with batch tracking, accidental errors affecting data integrity and intentional misdeeds. The pharmaceutical industry is most protective of data integrity, largely by regulation, which has made testing software for pharmaceutical applications very expensive.
More reasonably priced software for food testing data is now available while still ensuring data integrity and traceability. Brookfield Texture Pro software comes with an active secure mode which accommodates multiple login identities but only one administrator login. The responsibility of the administrator is to set up testing protocols with naming schemes convenient to the products being tested. The actual testing is then done by technicians or QC personnel with normal user login names. User logins are unable to change or create any testing protocols. All test protocols can only be run exactly as they were specified by the administrator at the time they were created. The system prevents accidental, or intentional, changes in the test methodology, further insuring valid test data.
All test results are secure in a locked down Microsoft Access database. This provides a very compact system for storing a lot of test data while still enabling quick and easy access to your data files through intuitive search filters.
For more information about Brookfield’s CT3 Texture Analyzer, visit http://www.brookfieldengineering.com/products/texture-analysis/ct3.asp or call 800.628.8139 or 508.946.6200.

DOES BROOKFIELD'S POWDER FLOW TESTER WORK FOR YOUR APPLICATION?
New Video Answers the Question!
Middleboro, MA - Brookfield's website, www.brookfieldengineering.com, now hosts an informative video on powder flow behavior in gravity discharge from hoppers. The challenge for powder processing companies is to predict flow behavior before problems occur. Meeting this challenge is Brookfield's new Powder Flow Tester which uses "shear cell technology" to perform established scientific tests on flowability. The video answers basic questions on how to measure powders and why the PFT offers the best solution available today.
The video depicts basic flow behavior patterns known as "mass flow" and "core flow". Typical problems that impede powder flow, such as arching and rathole formation, are reviewed. Reasons for use of shear cell testing to characterize flow are compared to simpler methods like flow cups and angle of repose. Convincing reasons to consider Brookfield's PFT relate to ease of use, quickness of test, and data output that gives a clear indication on whether the powder will flow.
Potential customers include formulators in R&D, incoming inspection for raw ingredients, QC for sign off on finished product, and process engineers responsible for solving flow problems. Universities with food and chemical engineering departments and equipment manufacturers are also likely candidates.
To view Brookfield videos, visit www.brookfieldengineering.com/support/videos.asp today. If you have additional questions or comments, call Brookfield at 800.628.8139 or 508.946.6200.

viscosityjournal.com "Asks The Expert" Dr. Daniel Saucy
Rheological Properties for Waterborne Paints and Coatings
Middleboro, MA - ViscosityJournal.com recently interviewed Dr. Daniel Saucy to discuss the best rheological properties for waterborne, often called latex, paints and coatings. During this interview, Dr. Saucy explains why characterizing a coatings rheology profile is necessary to direct the development of new formulations with good application properties. Brookfield Sales Engineer Vincent Hebert conducted the Interview.
Paints and coatings are typically shear thinning in flow behavior and are subjected to various shear and stress conditions during application. Understanding which viscosity measurements and which instruments to use guides the design of a rheology test method for a coating and can save considerable development time and cost.

New Powder Flow Pro Software Delivers "Critical" Test Data!
Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering has released Powder Flow Pro V1.1, a new updated version of Brookfield's automated software used to control it's Powder Flow Tester. Significant changes include a modified test method designed to achieve "critical consolidation" of the powder sample contained in the shear cell. Updated data graphics and improved test formats are also provided.
The new Powder Flow Pro V1.1 is available via download free of charge to customers who have purchased a Brookfield Powder Flow Tester.
With this new critical consolidation procedure, the shear cell Trough turns in repeated short rotations while a constant consolidation stress is applied by the Vane Lid. This causes the powder material to settle into place, removing air pockets and achieving a "low-energy" state. With the powder packed as tight as possible, the instrument can then determine the powder's failure strength by shearing the material in the Lid against the material in the Trough.
The new Powder Flow Pro software also features improved graphing capabilities, allowing for additional ways to use and manipulate data. Powder Flow Pro calculates and displays data in a variety of formats at the end of each test, and is able to overlay up to eight separate powder sample tests on a single graph for easy comparison.
For additional information or to download Brookfield's new Powder Flow Pro V1.1, visit www.brookfieldengineering.com/products/software/powder-flow-pro.asp or call 800.628.8139 (USA and Canada) or 508.946.6200.

The Falling Ball Viscometer...
... a Simple, Precise Solution to Measuring Newtonian Fluids.
Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering celebrates its 75th Anniversary by introducing the new Falling Ball Viscometer, an instrument that provides dynamic viscosity measurement of transparent Newtonian fluids.
The Falling Ball Viscometer utilizes the simple but precise Höppler principle to measure viscosity. The basic concept is to measure the elapsed time required for the ball to fall under gravity through a sample-filled tube inclined at an angle. The tube is mounted on a pivot bearing which quickly allows rotation of the tube 180 degrees, thereby allowing a repeat test to run immediately. Three measurements are taken and the average time is converted into a final viscosity value in centipoise.
The Falling Ball Viscometer is used for quality control in various industries as well as in academic institutions to illustrate scientific method. It can be used with a Brookfield Circulating Bath for rapid sample temperature control which provides more accurate and repeatable results.
Model KF10 has a fixed angle of 80 degrees in accordance with the DIN 53015 and the Model KF20 provides variable angle settings for flexibility in testing a broader range of materials. Both models include a set of six balls, each with a separate viscosity measurement range and a temperature probe.

Brookfield Sales Engineer David Moonay, Ph.D., awarded U.S. Patent
Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Sales Engineer and Rheology Lab Supervisor, David Moonay, Ph.D., has been awarded a U.S. patent for an algorithm he developed that provides "multi-decade viscometric or rheologic measurements of a material undergoing state change." According to Dr. Moonay, "This algorithm allows us to use Brookfield instruments to collect data on products that gel or cure over a much wider range of viscosity than ever before." Unfortunately, in the past, the only option for customers was to spend between $30,000 and $50,000 for a high-end rheometer.
Dr. Moonay developed this solution after talking with customers who complained that their gel timers couldn't get the viscosity data they needed. Now, Brookfield customers can monitor gelling over a wide viscosity range at a reasonable price. The "Cure Mode Test" is included in Brookfield Rheocalc Software (Version 3.0 and above), and can run on DV-II+Pro Viscometers, DV-III+ and DV-III Ultra Rheometers.
The Cure Mode Test is ideal for adhesives, advanced composites, polymers, and has possible applications in other food, chemical and petroleum products.

Simple, Economical Viscosity Control for Printing Applications including Coatings, and Adhesives
Middleboro, MA - Brookfield Engineering, the world leader in viscosity measurement offers simple in-line viscosity control for industrial applications. The AST-100 is available with single and multi station controllers for applications including printing ink, coatings and adhesives.
The AST-300SY single station viscosity controller is designed for use with the Brookfield AST-100TSY system to control viscosity and temperature, interlock with other process devices, and accurately control fluid viscosity in a variety of applications.
The AST-300SY is a precise, programmable controller with timed closing intervals. Its intuitive screen layout allows for quick selection of setup and menu items. At a glance, set point and alarm status are displayed as are viscosity in cP, mPa.s, cSt or cup-seconds, and temperature in C or F. Additional features include:
The NEW AST-400SY multi-station controller exhibits the same features with the ability to control up to 10 units.
Both controllers work with the AST-100TSY viscosity sensor to provide consistent viscosity control for your process needs. Whether you are using inks, coatings or adhesives, the AST-100 can help maintain the quality of your product to meet your customer’s needs.
It’s a matter of maintaining optimum coverage
A problem with ink film that’s too light is easily seen; but ink film that’s too heavy cannot be detected by the eye. Once mass-tone is achieved, ink film does not change as it becomes thicker. To the unaided eye the top of a .001" thick film will appear little different from a film of the same ink .0001" thick. Without sophisticated viscosity control it’s possible to waste a lot of expensive ink. The same is true of other coatings and adhesives as well.
Brookfield's AST-100 Automatic Viscosity Control maintains ink/coating/adhesive thickness at correct levels throughout the run.
This is an automatic control system that continuously senses viscosity, transmitting a signal when additional solvent is required, thus preventing wasteful material buildup.
Sensitive control is the key
Control of the slightest change in viscosity makes all the difference to successfully applying material - particularly in the low viscosity region of the thin inks currently in use. The Brookfield Ast-100 has a simple, rugged design that allows it to maintain accurate control at low viscosities. With an economical price, no moving parts, and no calibration required, other viscosity control systems can’t match it.
For more information on the sanitary AST-100 with single station or multi-station control, go to www.inkviscosity.com or contact Moses Mendez at 800.628.8139.
